Gierle means something like 'grove on raised sandy ground near a marsh'. The village centre of Gierle, including the Singel with church and walled cemetery lined with stately chestnut trees, the Latin School, the gin distillery, the old town hall with busts and village pump, the café Den Eik and some village houses, were listed in 1979.
You can visit the village centre of Gierle with a guide. In the listed village centre, the guide leads you past the Latin school, the later gin distillery, the Kempen barn, the stone mill 'In Stormen Sterk', the monastery, the former town hall, and the inn 'Den Eik', singer Louis Neefs' regular pub. Finally, you visit the pretty village church with its fascinating treasures.
