Gageleer Regional Beer

Gageleer is a golden beer that forms a nice white head of foam in the Gageleer glass. The aroma is malty, slightly sweet, fruity, and spicy. The taste of Gageleer is distinctive and unique: spicy with a touch of pepper and eucalyptus. It's a refreshing but strong beer, with an alcohol content of 7.5%.

Besides the original Gageleer, try the Gageleer Superior Dark or the Gageleer Sour White No Hops.

An organic beer with Lille barley

Organic farming favours beautiful landscapes full of nature, where it's pleasant to relax and animals can lead a dignified existence. In addition, organic agriculture has a positive impact on the social fabric of rural areas and promotes healthy, affordable food; preferably with a decent income for the farmer and respect for the situation in the south. This isn't simple.

Organic farmer Joris Willems has been farming organically on his land on Groesaard in Poederlee for years. A few years ago, he had a milking machine installed near his barns, and now he also proudly presents his own beer, brewed with organic barley.

In 2011, he was already able to harvest over 25 tonnes of barley which was malted at Dingemans in Stabroek. The Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi used it to brew a first 'limited edition' of 60,000 litres of Gageleer.

Farmer Joris, however, wouldn't rest until his bottles of beer bore the one real organic label. In 2012, he harvested over 21 tonnes of organic barley malt that met the malting industry's strictest quality standards. It flawlessly passed tests at both the Phytolab in Zwijnaarde and the world-renowned brewery college in Berlin, Germany.

The foundations for a new 'limited edition' of 30,000 litres of Gageleer were laid. The organic beer brewed in 2012-2013 accounted for more than 90,000 glasses of delicious Gageleer.

Besides Tipsy from Gierle, Poederlee now also has its own beer.

Age-old gruit beer

Gagel is a low shrub that grows in the nutrient-poor marshes of the Kempen region. Its aromatic leaves and flowers were already used in the Middle Ages as the main ingredient of 'gruut' or 'gruit', the flavouring and preservative of beer at the time. That old recipe has been brought back to life in the Gageleer.

A beer with an origin

The source of the Gageleer is located in the De Liereman Nature Reserve in Oud-Turnhout in the Kempen.

It relies on the staple product Gagel that is inextricably linked to the landscape, and the commitment of the brewers; volunteers from Natuurpunt, who help manage De Liereman.
