The Kempense Meren (Kempen lakes) Trail Network provides 270 kilometres of walking pleasure in the municipalities of Dessel, Mol and Retie.
The name of the trail network refers to the watery landscape so characteristic of Mol and Dessel. The reclamation of white sand in the region that began in the second half of the 19th century created a patchwork of lakes, pools, and ponds. Nowadays, many of them are beautiful nature reserves, while others are attractive recreation parks.
Cyclists will love the car-free towpaths alongside the canals. At the top of the Sas4 Tower, where three canals meet, you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama. Other special places are the water mill on the Kleine Nete in Retie, and the Norbertine Abbey in Postel. There's no better way to round off your walk than with an abbey beer.
The trail network map can be bought at the town hall reception (payable in cash) and online via Kempen. The map costs €8.

4,855 red-and-white signs
The trail network is structured around nodes, just like the numbered-node cycle network. You simply follow the rectangular, red-and-white signs from node to node. The Province of Antwerp Tourist Board has placed no less than 4,855 of them. You can follow the signs in two directions.
