Kindernouw Nature Reserve

The Kindernouw is a unique combination of low bog marsh, wet grasslands, wood hedges, woods, and ponds.

The area has well preserved its ancient structure, which is partly why it's now a protected landscape. The great variety makes it an excellent habitat for unusual plants and animals. Through haymaking, coppice management and the use of livestock, Natuurpunt is preserving diversity in the area. Nature development turns illegal recreational ponds into natural water features.

Sometimes it takes several years before the results of management become visible, but some encouraging observations suggest we're doing well. Cutting down the wood edging along the herb-rich hay meadow Baggers (= first plot ever purchased) so that it gets more light again was a drastic intervention at first glance, but among the green carpet of many species of 'Zegges'(sedges), a lacework of hundreds of flowers has appeared. Some pools were created in the Kindernouw, where amphibians can flourish.

More info on various walking routes in the Kindernouw can be found on the Natuurpunt site.
